The United States stands as a global export powerhouse, ranking as the world’s second-largest exporter and accounting for over 8% of global exports, with goods exports accounting for $1.29 trillion in the first half of 2024 alone. Behind this impressive statistic lies a fascinating mosaic of state-level contributions, each of its helping the US economy to grow and to strengths the economy. Every state with their specialized products find their way to international markets. From California’s technological innovations to Texas’s petroleum products, from Washington’s aircraft to Maine’s prized lobsters, every state plays a distinct role in America’s export story. 

The United States export relationships show distinct patterns in 2024. Canada remains the largest destination for American goods at $348.41 billion, followed closely by Mexico at $334.04 billion. China ranks third at $143.55 billion, with the Netherlands ($89.64 billion) and the United Kingdom ($79.89 billion) completing the top five destinations. These five markets account for a substantial portion of total U.S. exports, highlighting the continued importance of USMCA trade partners and major Asian economies to America’s export success.

LET’S COUNT ON BIGGEST EXPORTING STATES;

1:- Texas leads all states with approximately 22.32% of all US goods exports as of mid-2024, continuing its two-decade dominance in export markets primarily through petroleum and coal products, while simultaneously ranking as the nation’s leader in technology exports for ten consecutive years.

2:- California secures the second position with 8.74% of all US goods exports as of mid-2024, with computer and electronic product manufacturing representing its primary export category and accounting for 17.8% of total US exports in that industry.

3:-New York maintains its position as the third-largest exporting state, with a diverse export portfolio that includes precious metals, artwork, and financial services, continuing to leverage its position as a global financial center and cultural hub to reach international markets.

4:- Louisiana ranks fourth among exporting states, utilizing its strategic position at the mouth of the Mississippi River to export petroleum products, agricultural commodities, and chemicals to global markets, with exports representing a higher percentage of state GDP than any other state.

5:- Michigan ranks sixth in exports nationally, with transportation equipment dominating its export profile, reflecting the state’s historic and ongoing significance in automotive manufacturing within the integrated North American automotive supply chain.

6:- Florida maintains its position as the seventh-largest exporting state, focusing on computer and electronic products with Brazil rather than Canada or Mexico serving as its primary market, highlighting its unique role as America’s commercial gateway to Latin American economies.

7:- Washington continues as the eighth-largest exporting state, with aerospace products—particularly Boeing aircraft—dominating its export portfolio, while also ranking among the top states for agricultural exports, particularly to Asian markets.

8:- Ohio remains the ninth-largest exporting state, specializing in transportation equipment, machinery, and chemicals, building on its manufacturing heritage and strategic location within America’s industrial heartland to serve global markets.

9:- New Jersey rounds out the top ten exporting states with a specialization in chemical and pharmaceutical exports, leveraging its concentration of pharmaceutical companies and research facilities to export high-value medicinal products to international markets.

NEW EXPORTS FROM USA;

Beyond these major export categories, many states boast unique export specialties that reflect their distinctive economic niches and boosting exports of the economy. Arkansas stands as America’s top rice exporter, an industry valued at nearly $ 1 Billion that began expanding during World War I and II. South Dakota surprisingly exports brewing dregs (sediment from beer brewing) to Mexico, Vietnam, and South Korea, primarily for use in animal feed.

New York exports more sculptures than any other state, leveraging its position as an art world epicenter. The U.S. exported over $12 billion in art and antiques in 2020. Maine’s renowned lobsters, known for their large claws and tender meat from the cool northern waters, represent another distinctive state export. Meanwhile, Massachusetts exports quahog pearls with their characteristic uneven texture and mosaic pattern, harvested from Cape Cod.
